Mayor of Newham ‘tops out’ landmark development in Plaistow
Posted 09 March 2022
A landmark development in Plaistow providing 182 much needed homes and many new community facilities, reached a major milestone this week with a topping-out ceremony led by Rokhsana Fiaz, Mayor of Newham. The Plaistow Hub project is also helping to fund 112 affordable homes across Newham
Plaistow Hub is being developed by Newham’s wholly owned housing company; Populo Living, and features two separate buildings on London Road, and opposite at Valletta Grove.
A total of 182 new mixed tenure homes will be delivered across the two buildings in addition to an array of community facilities, including: a library, neighbourhood centre, supermarket, gym and café with the London Road building linking directly to the locally-listed Plaistow tube station through the creation of a new piazza.
The scheme, which is due to complete Summer 2023, is being constructed by Newham-based regeneration specialist Vistry Partnerships and is designed by Pitman Tozer architects.
The Mayor broke ground on the site in June 2021 and the topping-out ceremony celebrates this phase reaching its highest point, with the largest of the two blocks standing at 15 storeys in height.
Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, Mayor of Newham, commented: “I’m delighted to mark the topping out this iconic new building which will benefit the whole of Newham. Plaistow Hub is helping to deliver 112 genuinely affordable homes across Newham for local families, helping to reach my target to start building 1000 council owned homes by May 2022. This beautiful new building will also house a new neighbourhood centre and library, a new supermarket, a new gym and a new cafe for local people in Plaistow.”
Ray Toft, Divisional Managing Director of Vistry Partnerships, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Populo Living to deliver this landmark mixed-use scheme in Plaistow which will provide new, high-quality housing and community facilities for local people to both live, work and benefit from.”
“Vistry have a long history of delivering affordable housing across Newham, and Plaistow Hub marks our ‘twenty first’ project within the borough, bringing the total number of mixed-tenure homes built by us, to-date, since 2001, to just over 3,000 homes - two thirds of which have been affordable housing. We look forward to delivering further much-needed affordable housing across the Borough.”
