We’re excited to share the news that Carpenters Estate has been shortlisted for the New London Awards for its Masterplan.

This key document was co-developed with Carpenters residents, who overwhelmingly voted for the plan in the independent ballot, prior to its approval by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) in February.

Representing one of the largest regeneration planning applications submitted in London, the £1bn Masterplan maps out the direction for the estate, which includes over 2,000 new homes, as well as commercial and community spaces and new green areas and parks.

It also includes the restoration of 314 homes on the estate, with existing council tenants - and those with the ‘right to return’ - secure in the knowledge that they can continue to call the estate their home.

Proctor & Matthews Architects and Metropolitan Workshop were appointed to the scheme in 2019, and worked with residents to create the vision for the estate. Core to the scheme was the residents’ desire to restore and enhance the existing sense of community, with a mix of housing types to support diversity. This includes the restoration of two of the original 1960s tower blocks, with a mix of new buildings of varying heights and volumes across the estate.

As well as the architect teams, consultants Tibbalds CampbellReith JV, along with LDA for landscaping and XCO2 on energy/sustainability/environmental reporting, worked on the masterplan on behalf of Populo Living, Newham’s wholly owned housing company.

The New London Awards, from the New London Architecture team, celebrate some of the best and most innovative development in the city, across a range of specialisms.
