Celebrating Black History Month at Dovetail Community Centre

Posted 29 October 2024

This October, Dovetail Community Centre transformed into a hub of culture and creativity as we celebrated Black History Month. Under the powerful theme of "Reclaiming Narratives," our events brought the community together to honour and reflect on the rich history and contributions of Black culture.

From energetic Afrodance workshops to a lively Reggae Bingo session and exciting skate meetup, our activities were designed to engage participants of all ages and abilities. Each event was curated by Amanda Henry, from our resident engagement team, and not only celebrated the arts but also fostered a sense of belonging and connection within our community.

The Afrodance workshops, led by resident Ivy Aubin, allowed participants to express themselves through movement while learning about the historical significance of traditional Ghanaian dances such as Adowa, Kete and Baber. These sessions were not just about fun; they were an opportunity to reclaim and celebrate cultural heritage – and we toasted our hard work afterwards with some delicious food.

For our Reggae bingo event, we added a twist to the classic game. Carpenters residents and locals enjoyed the lively atmosphere while discovering music and stories that have shaped the reggae genre. The joy and laughter in the room, complemented by a classic reggae soundtrack, highlighted the power of community gathering.

Our skating sessions, organised in collaboration with the fantastic crew at Skate Cabal, were a hit, bringing together skaters and newcomers alike. The positive energy was infectious, creating an inclusive space where everyone felt welcome. A special shout-out to the Skate Cabal team for their hard work and dedication in making these sessions so special!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us in these celebrations. Your participation made our events a success, and it’s a reminder of the strength and beauty of our community. As we continue to reflect on our narratives and honour our histories, we look forward to more opportunities for connection and celebration.

Thank you once again to all who supported us during this Black History Month. Together, we can continue to reclaim narratives, celebrate diversity, and create lasting memories. Stay tuned for more events at Dovetail Community Centre!
