Hawkins/Brown Appointed as Lead Designer for Lund Quarter

Posted 21 August 2024

We are so excited to announce that Hawkins\Brown has been chosen as the Lead Designer for Phase 2 of the Carpenters Estate Regeneration – Lund Quarter.

After a seriously competitive selection process that involved top architecture practices and input from residents, Hawkins\Brown was selected for its vision to create a great living space focused on community and sustainability. Recognised as the ideal choice due to its experience with similar estate regeneration projects, Hawkins\Brown now leads a team that includes Bell Phillips, Fisher Cheng, and Grant Associates.

Other key partners on board include Pell Frischmann for engineering, Aecom for sustainability and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) services, Pillar Consulting for project management, RPS for planning, and Cumming Group for cost management.

This announcement marks a big step for the residents of Carpenters Estate and Newham Council, after the overwhelming approval of the masterplan back in February. The design process is now underway, with the submission of a detailed planning application for Phase 2 expected next year.

Part of Hawkins\Brown’s vision for the Lund Quarter produced as part of its winning submission for the selection process.

As the first major phase of the Carpenters Estate regeneration, the Lund Quarter will provide up to 500 new homes, including the renovation of Lund Point tower, along with commercial space and public areas.

Newham’s Mayor, Rokhsana Fiaz, said: “The announcement of the winning design team for the Phase 2 - Lund Quarter on the Carpenters Estate marks an exciting milestone in progressing the vision set out by the residents in the estate-wide masterplan. Following a procurement process involving six leading architects and their designs for the evolution of the scheme, Hawkins\Brown’s scheme, proposing 500 homes, will be designed with – and prioritised for – existing residents of the estate to move into. This is a great outcome and will transform the lives of local people.”

Nick Clough, Carpenters Project Director at Populo Living, added: “We welcome Hawkins\Brown and the suite of outstanding companies to the Carpenters’ team. We look forward to working together to build on the good work set out in the outline Masterplan with residents. The tenant-led Masterplan sets the agenda for over 2,200 greener and beautiful new homes that many more Newham residents will call home. Phase 2 – Lund Quarter, will be transformational for the estate and set out new homes, streets and public space for the existing community to move to, making way for the delivery of the rest of the masterplan.”
